Dorothy Pointon
After school in which I had a very limited art tuition I went to evening classes at Whitefield. From there I took art courses at different colleges mainly as a leisure activity. This developed a need to know more on the practical side of painting not just to make a pretty picture. The effects of light, shade, depth, and the challenge of watercolour, all interested me. I now have a need to paint which I do most days.
I try not to be influenced by other artists but 20th century artists do appeal to me, bold colours and brush marks and a freedom of style those are the one that are refreshing.
My subject matter depends on what catches my eye, the mood of the weather, the view down an alley or over a garden wall all stimulate ideas. The medium I use dictates my style and sometimes a slightly surreal effect occurs which I like. I would like to widen my range and become bolder in my work and continue painting.
